2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to address community desires.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete message from the president's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the necessity for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to heart and revamped the title with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our audience.
The belief in this project increases every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having spent the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all eager to continue observing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.
The President

Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that shift every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as production continues.
