Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
